Grand Valley State University Art & Design Department: THE CAIR (Ceramics Artist In Residency) PROGRAM

The Program will edify students’ intellectual curiosity, aesthetics, professionalism and social conscience by cultivating idea, material, process and concept within the context of ceramic art.

Idea: Students will gain a better understanding of what contemporary ceramic art is through interaction with the artist. By analyzing the aesthetics of ceramic art in current art & design critical theory, students will better determine where their work fit within its realm.

Material: Students will explore a broader range of materials that support ceramic art including, but not limited to, clay bodies, glazes, kilns, tools, etc. Students will learn new ceramic techniques from demonstrations and collaboration with the artist, which will compliment current means of creation.

Process: Students will find and accumulate greater resources regarding potential career opportunities to pursue upon graduation. These may include, but are not limited to, Graduate programs, Artist-In-Residency programs, Apprenticeships, Internships, Special Student positions, Gallery Work and/or Professional Studio Potter, etc. Students will foster new ceramic directions by making acquaintances with established national as well as international ceramic artists.

Concept: Students will interpret and articulate their position within the context of social conscience as ceramic professionals. Students will also establish their role as a ceramic artist in the contemporary art world. Each student will perceive what their responsibilities are as a ceramic artist within their respective community and society.

THE CAIR PROGRAM

The CAIR (Ceramics Artist In Residency) Program, offered during the Fall semester of each academic year, is a self-directed semester-long residency providing time and space for the visiting artist to pursue a proposed body of work in a stimulating academic community. The artist will be expected to interact and collaborate with students, give lectures and demonstrations about his/her work, present his/her work to the public in the form of a solo exhibition, and offer dialogue and information through CAIR Courses (Art 380-01: Special Topics in Arts: Ceramics & Art 380-2: Selected Experiences in Studio Art: Ceramics). GVSU Ceramics program will provide the artist with a studio space and housing, as well as, a gross stipend of $4000 ($1000/month) per semester. All other expenses including food, materials and exhibition costs are the responsibility of the artist.
